Because Washington refuses to act on federal legislation that would help protect Americans from illegal guns, local leadership is crucial to protecting public safety.
Mike Bloomberg is supporting six state Senate candidates in Virginia who will stand up for strong background checks and other protections – and stand up against the gun lobby’s effort to gut the gun laws the Commonwealth already has in place.
For years, guns from Virginia have wreaked havoc in New York. In 2007, a gun purchased illegally in Virginia and trafficked to New York City was the murder weapon used to kill NYPD officer Russel Timoshenko.
Mike Bloomberg is supporting the campaigns of Sen. Toddy Puller (Fairfax), Sen. Dave Marsden (Fairfax), Sen. George Barker (Prince William), Sen. Mark Herring (Loudoun), Sen. John Miller (Newport News) and Barbara Favola, who is running for an open seat in Arlington.
These candidates will work to pass smart new laws, such as closing Virginia’s gun show loophole. They will also work to ensure that Virginia does not repeal current safeguards that help protect Virginians, New Yorkers, and all Americans. They understand that weakening Virginia’s gun laws would enable dangerous criminals to exploit loopholes and traffic more illegal guns from Virginia to other states across the country, including New York.
