As president, Mike will invest in pathways that create new opportunities and access to well-paying jobs for all Americans.

  • Through Bloomberg Philanthropies, Mike is supporting organizations that help connect high school students with skills and experience. So far over 2,000 students around the country have received skills training for high-demand jobs, and Mike’s support will help train 20,000 more students by 2022.
  • As mayor of New York City, Mike created innovative new high schools that combine work experience, internships, and career credentials with a traditional curriculum.
  • Mike launched and expanded programs to help young people get internships to learn digital skills and gain work experience. A paid internship program to help lower-income students in community college gain skills and access to good jobs.
  • Mike has supported the transition to clean energy in the coal regions of West Virginia through a program that created 200 new jobs in forward-looking industries – including energy efficiency, sustainable construction, and local agriculture – and provided skills training to more than 1,000 people.
  • Bloomberg LP joined forces with the Fortune Society to create a paid internship program for people who were formerly incarcerated and face obstacles to full-time employment.

As president, Mike will ensure the federal government leads an ambitious agenda to accelerate the U.S. toward a clean energy economy.

  • Mike’s partnership with the Sierra Club to replace U.S. coal-fired power plants with clean energy has led to nearly 300 coal plant closures and 10,000 fewer deaths from coal pollution each year. According to Politico, it may be the most successful campaign “in the history of the environmental movement.”
  • Mike and former California Governor Jerry Brown have rallied thousands of cities, states, businesses, and other organizations to uphold America’s obligations under the Paris Climate Agreement, after President Trump announced he would pull out of the pact.
  • Mike created America’s most comprehensive urban sustainability plan, which reduced New York City’s carbon footprint by 14%, expanded solar power, eliminated dirty-burning heating oil, and achieved New York City’s cleanest air quality in more than 50 years.
  • Mike’s mayoral administration planted 800,000 trees and added 850 acres of parkland.

He has spent years and hundreds of millions of dollars fighting gun violence and supporting successful campaigns for smart state safety laws. Helping those most in need.
When Mike was mayor, no city devoted more energy and resources to combating homelessness than New York City. His administration nearly doubled the city budget for homeless services and cut street homelessness.

  • Mike’s team began counting the number of people who lived on the streets, which helped reduce street homelessness by 28 percent, inspiring other cities to follow and do their own street counts.
  • Mike ordered a notorious family intake center to be torn down and replaced it with a new, modern $65 million facility that improved people’s experience with city government.
  • Mike partnered with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to create Operation Home, a task force to combat veteran homelessness in New York City.
  • Mike’s final city budget included $981 million for homeless services – almost double the amount the city had spent the year before he took office.

Affordable homes for working families.
As mayor of New York City, Mike created the largest affordable housing program in the country. He led the push for long-overdue zoning reforms that laid the groundwork for new affordable units. He created incentives for builders of affordable housing and established public-private partnerships to fund new development, while also preserving thousands of units for middle- and moderate-income families.

  • Mike oversaw the construction or preservation of 175,000 affordable housing units in New York City between 2002 and 2013 – the biggest affordable housing program in the nation.

As an entrepreneur, Mike created an information technology start-up that grew into a global business. As mayor, he diversified New York City’s economy and led its comeback after the 9/11 attacks. When the Great Recession struck in 2008, Mike had prepared the city, which recovered faster and stronger than the country overall. As president, Mike will work to strengthen the middle class, invest in education, create good-paying jobs in renewable energy and other industries with a bright future, and open the door of opportunity to every American.

Political Reform
Fixing Washington.
Mike has always been independent from special interests – he has never accepted campaign contributions – and has worked to eliminate the corrosive power of money in politics. As president, Mike will clean up the mess in Washington by making political reform a top priority. He'll work with Congress to overhaul the campaign finance system, stop pay-to-play, bring transparency to dark money, strengthen ethics and regulations around conflicts of interest, and improve access to the ballot – all of which he succeeded in doing as mayor of New York City.

  • Mike expanded public financing of elections in New York City by increasing the matching rate for small donations from $4 to $6, which meant that a $25 donation resulted in a $150 public match.
  • Mike cracked down on pay-to-play by drastically limiting campaign contributions from individuals and entities that did business with government.
  • Mike supported passage of a law that required spending in referendum campaigns to be publicly disclosed.
  • Mike strengthened the New York City's ethics and conflicts of interest laws and forced lobbyists to disclose their contacts with city officials.
  • Mike made it easier to register to vote, created a web- and video-based voter guide, and supported efforts to allow voting on weekends.
Poverty Reduction
Innovative programs to lift people up.
As mayor, Mike helped raise incomes for working families, created local tax credits to boost earnings, expanded access to public health insurance, and connected more people with career opportunities. New York City became a pioneer in the fight against poverty, creating successful new public-private partnerships that have been replicated across the country. The result was that during Mike’s time as mayor, New York City was the only large U.S. city not to experience an increase in poverty.

  • Mike reduced the tax burden for New York City's working families through a Child Care Tax Credit and Earned Income Tax Credit initiative.
  • Mike created the Office of Financial Empowerment, the first municipal office designed to help low-income New Yorkers build savings and make the most of their money.
  • Mike launched both the award-winning Center for Economic Opportunity and the Young Men’s Initiative adapted by the Obama administration.
  • In addition to increasing city spending on anti-poverty efforts, Mike donated more than $320 million of his own money to help New Yorkers most at risk of getting trapped in poverty.
  • Mike’s administration helped nearly 900,000 people move from welfare to work, while welfare rolls fell by 25%.
Public Safety & Criminal Justice

Under Mike’s leadership, New York City was the safest big city in America. During his time as mayor, he worked with law enforcement and community leaders to drive down crime to record lows while also reducing recidivism and incarceration rates. As president, Mike will bring this same approach to the White House, working for safer communities and a fair criminal justice system.

  • Under Mike, crime in New York City fell by more than 32%, far outpacing the nation.
  • Mike cut murders in half, to a record low. During Mike’s twelve years as mayor, there were 9,285 fewer murders than in the previous twelve years.
  • Mike introduced new alternatives to incarceration that helped reduce the number of people behind bars by 39%, even as incarceration rates increased overall in the rest of the country.
  • Mike has led the fight against illegal guns in the United States, both as mayor of New York City and as the co-founder of the bipartisan coalition Mayors Against Illegal Guns – which joined with Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America in April, 2014, to form Everytown for Gun Safety.
  • Mike led the successful charge to allow juvenile offenders to stay in their communities and continue their education, ending the practice of sending young people convicted of offenses to detention facilities outside of the city.
  • Mike’s administration introduced risk assessment and other community-based alternatives to detention for juvenile offenders, reducing the number of low-risk youth detained by 63% and reducing recidivism by 23%.
