Readout of UN Special Envoy Michael R. Bloomberg’s Call with Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga of Japan

On April 29, 2021, at the request of the United Nations Secretary-General, Michael R. Bloomberg, the Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Climate Ambition and Solutions, spoke with Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga of Japan to discuss Japan’s vital contributions to addressing climate change. Special Envoy Bloomberg commended Japan’s recent announcement to reduce its greenhouse gas emission by 46% in 2030 from 2013 levels and to continue strenuous efforts in its challenge to meet the lofty goal of cutting its emission by 50% and stressed the importance of accelerating the transition from coal to renewable energy to achieve this goal. He also underlined the importance of Japan’s leadership in the area of climate change, which contributes to further actions by other countries around the world.
