Statement of Michael R. Bloomberg on the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act

Almost 10 years ago, the Senate’s failure to act after the horrific mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School helped inspire us to start Everytown for Gun Safety, which now has nearly 10 million supporters. Their dedication – led by Moms Demand Action – has helped pass bipartisan gun safety bills in states around the country. And now, thanks to that foundation, U.S. Senators in both parties have passed the first major federal gun safety legislation in a generation. This bill will save lives, and it incentivizes more bipartisan action on gun safety at the state and city levels. We still have a lot of work to do, but we are a big step closer to treating gun violence as the public health crisis it is, and putting the safety of Americans over the gun industry’s lobbying efforts.
